Summer Wrap up blog

Now it is a month later from move in day. The PSSI program has both changed me academically, and mentally. Going into the fall I am happy because i have a group of friends, who have the same classes as me. These friends are from PSSI and i do believe with the team work we have now it’ll get stronger in the fall. Also with these friends we could do study work together to build up each others grades.

In the fall i’ll try to give myself a study hall like we have now in the program. The study hall makes me focus on what i have to do. Although its only two hours long a day for the program i can build more time in the fall .

Finally, in the program we have to leave our phones behind in the room all day. In the beginning i hated it because i couldn’t talk to anyone back home. Now, I kinda forget about my phone because i am so connected to my classmates.  So in the fall i think I’ll continue to set my phone aside at times. What i know for a fact that I’ll not use my phone in classes.

Note Taking

In the beginning of the PSSI program i didn’t have well structured note taking skills. The reason why i had poor note taking skills was because my high school had iPads so they would just send us power points and i didn’t have to do much work. After being here for almost 4 weeks i can see my note taking skills improving. In anthropology class we have to write good notes in order to pass or open note class quizzes. Dr. Garcia gives us mostly two four page articles and we have to write notes on them. The reason why i know my note taking is improving is because of my good quiz scores.  I also use visual learning like with my math notes. By making blocks and shapes to solve my math problems I am able to develop answers.

By having these good test scores my attitude when i come to class is more positive. Some students when they fail something loose motivation, and I also sometimes feel that way to.

Using new reading skills

The strategies I used for the readings from the last time i wAs here in the library was considering an environment and space. I can’t read with loud noise in the background and also i can’t do my work . So to avoid this problem i stepped out ad did my work outside the room. Secondly i used the method of reading the last chapter before reading the while passage of stuff. This method gave me a better understanding of the reading.

Both of the strategies i listed above are something i will carry throughout college. After being in this program for two weeks i realized i needed better reading skills. What didn’t work was writing questions in the margins because i would just foeget they were there. Also i would have a hard rime developing questions because i cant understand readings that well.

In a timly matter if i do like reading composition skills online maybe my reading skills will be better. Also not getting lazy while i read.

FIRST BLOGGG

One of my learning experiences was volunteering with the Olivet’s Boy’s and Girl’s Club. This club is an organization where kids have something to do with their friends through summer camps. One of the steps I  had to put myself in was to be patient with the kids. This step was difficult for me because kids bother me a lot and they are hard to keep up with. Another step was to be positive with them at all times. The reason for me to be positive is because i cant show a negative attitude because they’ll return the same energy. Also with being negative the kids will not corporate well so that’ll make my job more difficult. The last step was to be committed. Although the camp was only a summer long, I was donating my summer which was hard in the beginning. It was hard because I’m used to being with my friends all the time which are my age. After taking the Strength Finder test i found three strengths that relate to this experience. These strengths are achiever, consistency, and positivity. Which these strengths actually were my steps to succeed this learning experience. What I learned from this experience is that not everything is within my comfort zone. I have to adjust to new things and use my strengths to help me out. Finally i feel as though my strengths will help me with my classes to achieve better grades.  Also these strengths show me to show up to class and never give up!
