Plan for Fall Semester

The Fall Semester is approaching rapidly, meaning that I will start having test/exams for my classes for this semester. The Note-taking strategies that I learned in this four week summer program will significantly help me through my first year at Millersville University.

I have gained many new tips from attending the Learning how to Learn class that I had. For the fall semester I plan to use the new strategy that I discovered in the class, which was designating a specific amount of time for my reading assignments. By this I mean setting an amount of time such as 5 minutes for each page that I read. This strategy will help me by being able to fully being able to complete my reading assignment. Setting goals for my reading strategies will be essential during my first semester at Millersville.

Through the PSSI program, I learned the difference between the school work in High School compared to College work. Using note taking strategies will help me understand the material better, rather than being unorganized like my High School years. For the fall semester, the note taking strategies of the Cornell Method and Visual Mapping will help me have organized notes. These strategies are helpful through keeping my notes in an organized manner. I am more of a visual learner, so I am making it a goal for me to use the Visual Mapping strategy a lot during this semester.

I am anxious for the Fall Semester to begin next Monday. I can’t wait to meet new people, attend Athletics games, etc. However, my education comes first. So, I will being using any Note taking strategies that will help me become a better student academically.

Cornell Note Strategy Method

Last week, I tried out a new method for note taking. The Cornell Method is one not taking method that I haven’t used before. Using this method for Dr. Garcia’s class was easier than using it for Dr. Corkery’s class. Applying this method to Dr. Garcia’s class was easy because it is easier to capture the main points in article rather than a piece of literature. I was able to write down main points and detailed points. In the end, I was able to combine the main concepts that was presented through the articles. Dr. Corkery’s class was a little harder to use this method but it wasn’t impossible. There is more to grasp in English. The Cornell Method took more time for English, but it helped me developed the main themes in the works.

Some specific examples of the use this note taking method was when I read In Search Of My Mother’s Garden, by Alice Walker.  I used it to form the main concepts of the beauty and art in a African American Women. For Dr. Garcia’s class, I did it for my three articles that I had to do last week. the method made it easier to accomplish the goal of grasping the main concepts of the articles and notes.

This Method is a little more difficult for me to work with because I am very structured and organized. The Cornell Method consist of 2 to 3 steps. I just like grasping the main points and having well organized notes. Although I struggled some with using the note taking method, I enjoyed going a different approach for note taking.

Everyone should try using new methods of note taking!

Reflecting On My New Reading Stragtegies

My reading strategies for last weeks assignment was very useful in reading the articles. Strategies that were useful to me was planning a certain amount of time to read each page, make up questions, and reelections on what I read.

Many of the strategies worked for me while reading for my assignments. However, some were more difficult than others. The strategies that I used before reading and after reading ( recall and review) were the easy strategies. Although many of the strategies were easy, some were rather more difficult. The reading strategies of forming questions and Actively reading was harder simply because of the working in between me reading.

I will continue to use 3 main reading strategies throughout my college education here at Millersville University. I will continue to form questions and answers, discover main ideas and set a specific amount of time for each page. These 3 reading strategies significantly helped me through my reading assignment.

A way that I can continue these new reading strategies for new learning habits is through the process of repetition. Repeating a strategy will help me to develop this as a new study habit.

Organization is Key!

My chosen learning experience was organizing a Thirty-One bag party for a fundraiser. The steps to my party was planning the part, setting the time and place, providing snacks and inviting as many people as possible to the event. Firstly, I planned the day of the party and sent out an invitation to people. Next, I checked in with those who are coming to the party. Lastly, I was the host of the party. The money that was raised went to the fundraiser. The time that was put into the planning was rigorous because I was planning for the party and the fundraiser. A challenge that I had was the number of people that I wanted to attended not attending. However, the people that attended bought a nice amount of bags which contributed to the fundraiser. That was very satisfying to me. A strength that was a big component to this learning experience was my organization skills. It really contributed to planning everything. If I was not organized, the party for the fundraiser would have never happened. Insights that I concluded from this experience was to do something that is known but also where I can raise more money for the fundraiser.
