On Thursday, Nov. 16, the New York Yankees’ official X account posted “We’re thrilled to welcome Dave Sims as the new play-by-play voice of the Yankees on @WFAN660.”
Dave Sims will be replacing the legendary John Sterling as the primary Yankees broadcaster on the New York radio station, WFAN.
Sterling held this position for 35 years and never missed a single game from 1989 to 2019, according to his Wikipedia page. Sims will have big shoes to fill, but his resume speaks for itself.
With over 40 years of experience in the journalism and broadcasting fields, Sims was a prime candidate to take over for Sterling. Sims is coming from a job in which he called Seattle Mariners games.
You may remember him from his iconic call of the Seattle Mariners breaking their playoff drought during the 2022 season. Perhaps you know him from calling Felix Hernandez’s perfect game. Regardless of where you know him from, he’s not a stranger to big moments in sports history, which makes him the perfect choice to call Yankees games.
You can’t replace a broadcaster with John Sterling’s legacy in a day, but hiring Sims is probably the next best thing.
As a Yankees fan, all I’ve ever known about listening to games on the radio was John Sterling. It will be a little strange not to hear him anymore, but I think Sims is going to do an incredible job. If you aren’t familiar with Dave Sims or any of his previous work, I suggest you look him up. His work won’t disappoint you.
It will still be a while until we hear Sims on WFAN for the first time, but I’m excited to see the legacy he creates for himself. He doesn’t have to be John Sterling, all he has to do is be himself, continue putting out the work he always has, and fans will learn to love him.
