PlayStation September State of Play recap

Ben Staker                                                                                      Sports Editor

Tuesday, Sept. 24, PlayStation hosted their monthly State of Play livestream. If you’re unfamiliar with this concept, PlayStation does a 30-minute livestream every month to reveal upcoming games and other projects they’re working on. The initial reaction to this month’s reveals wasn’t too kind, but looking over everything again, there are actually a few things to highlight and look forward to.

The headliners for this month are “Ghost of Yotei”, “Astro Bot” DLC, a “Horizon Zero Dawn” remaster for the PS5, an expansion for “Alan Wake 2,” new trailers for “Monster Hunter Wilds” and “Dragon Age: Veilguard,” and the announcement of the PS5 Pro. There were a few other reveals during the livestream, but these are the things gaining the most traction amongst fans.

If I’m being honest, I was one of the people who initially saw this month’s reveals as underwhelming. However, after further research, I think there’s a lot here to be excited about. PlayStation choosing “WWE 2K24” and the new “Dead Space” remake as their PlayStation Plus free games of the month is a huge win. As for the reveals I’m most excited about, I think “Ghost of Yotei” and “Dragon Age: Veilguard” are the most intriguing.

“Ghost of Yotei” is a successor to Sucker Punch Productions’ hit game “Ghost of Tsushima.” While there may be a new protagonist and story this time around, the trailers have shown us that it’s going to be the same action-packed gameplay fans came to love from the previous installment. It’ll be interesting to see how the company tries to improve what was already viewed as a masterpiece by many. If this game ends up being even slightly as good as the previous installment, it’s something to look out for.

The other game that caught my eye was “Dragon Age: Veilguard.” This will be BioWare’s first installment in the “Dragon Age” series since “Dragon Age: Inquisition” won Game of the Year just over a decade ago. What’s nice about this series is that you don’t need to play any of the previous games to understand what’s going on. However, I highly recommend giving the previous games a try if you’re a fan of Role Playing Games (RPGs).

Everything that we’ve seen involving “Dragon Age: Veilguard” hints that BioWare is going in a new direction with the setting compared to their previous games. We don’t know much about the changes they’re making, but it’s something to keep an eye on. For me, the setting change is what has me most interested.

Overall, this month’s PlayStation State of Play is much better than many initially thought. If you’re interested in any of the games revealed this month, I encourage you to go back and play some of the other installments in the respective series. This month was a heavy emphasis on sequels, and it has me excited for what PlayStation has in store for October.
