Materials Processing

In 9th grade, I was in a class that cycled between four classes in the year, each exploring a different field of science, but the one of note was a woodworking class where we made a cutting board, and we had the choice to laser engrave something on it. And this coincides with the typography lesson because what we made in Illustrator, we were able to laser engrave on a tiny little 3×5 piece of scrap wood.

This should probably focus more on the laser engraving part, but I’m just gonna rant about the design I made. The example that our teacher put up when she was making hers was just her name and her number, so someone could contact her if she lost whatever it was attached to, but I had a more aesthetic idea for my design. I had seen someone on Tumblr mention the phrase “Empathy For The Sympathetic,” and I thought that was such a raw one-liner, I wanted to make my keychain say that, but I didn’t want it to just be left-aligned, Arial text, so I made 4 boxes for each of the words giving them appropiate space proportionate to the length of the word. then envelope warped(I think?) the letters to. fill the space in a way I like. And it ended up like this

This was a really fun activity, especially knowing that I could get a memento that I made that wasn’t just a boring(In my mind) necessary part of the class.
