Our System

Here is some more information about our system. Nicole, Paul and I decided to make a water culture system, but add a twist to it. When we were talking about what to grow first we thought maybe lettuce, but then we though a lot of people are going to do that. So to do something different we though corn, but found out that corn is really hard to grow. Even though we thought corn was hard to grow that didn’t stop us from trying and agreeing on growing strawberries. When looking up the best way to grow strawberries we found that growing them hydroponically number 1 makes them grow faster, but number 2 in  green house will help them even more. Luckily we had that option to use a green house  to grow our plants.

With their being only 6 groups in class we are able to have the green house for just our system letting us be able to keep the light and temperature at a place good for our strawberries. The strawberries need to have a temperature around 65-75 and a pH of 5.8 to 6.5. With that the seeds are planted in rock wool surrounded by clay pellets in a plastic green cup that we cut slits and hols into for them to get the water nutrient solution. The cups were placed in a piece of Styrofoam that we cut three hole into with about an inch in between each cup. the solution is a water based solution with plant nutrients in it and we also have three air stone in the system to aerate the water under each cup. Our seeds should take about 6 weeks to harvest and along the way we will be posting photos and more information about the progress. Stay tuned and as always if you have questions leave us a comment and we will try and answer it the best we can!
