Day 13- March 19th

It is the first day back after spring break and we were not sure what condition our plants and fish would be in. The fish seem healthy as you can see in the picture above, even though there was only about three inches of water left in the tank. When we left the tank, it was filled to the bottom of the drainage pipe therefore a significant amount of water was lost. We believe this was due to evaporation so we will keep an eye on the water level and refill the tank as needed.

The plants have been growing for almost two weeks now and have grown to between an 1″ and 3″.  In the picture above you can see that the plants look green and healthy. Also you can see how much they have grown. We will continue to monitor the water levels and feed the fish over the following weeks.

  1. I again give props to those who went out and did the aquaponics project. Way to go above and beyond. One question I have is; how are you pumping the water up to your plants without sucking up some fish? Is there a filter you are using, and does that filter restrict any thing that could be essential to the plants?

  2. I like the effort and thought you put into your system. I was curious if you guys are using just regular water and using the fishes’ waste for fertilizer because I wouldn’t think that you would be able to add the nutrient solution with the fish being in there. I am just throwing this out there as a suggestion but I am wondering if there is some type of organic food for the plants that you could add to the water without affecting the fish.
I am surprised your water level had dropped so much but on the other hand we were gone a little while for spring break. Good luck to you, your plants and your fish.

  3. Looking good guys! I was wondering about your fish, you said you chose those fish because of the amount of waste they produced. Does that mean they produce a lot of waste or not a lot of waste? I would assume you would want a lot of waste, so you have more nutrients… but i don’t know.

  4. I think its pretty cool you guys decided to go with aquaponics. I also couldn’t believe how much water you guys lost. Think it could be your pump? It seems like it is pumping a lot of water, at least more than it needs to. Maybe try turning it down or restricting the flow somehow. Other than that your plants look healthy. Good luck with the water issue.

  5. Your plants look very healthy! The aquaponics system really seams to be working out for your plants. I couldn’t believe how much water you guys lost over break. After George told me how much you guys lost, I was shocked. However, it sounds like you guys have it under control and your plants seamed to be doing well.
