Staff Spotlight: Aly Sehl

Aly Sehl celebrated her 12th anniversary at Millersville University in July. She is currently the Assistant Director for Campus Life and Community Standards for Commuter, Off-Campus and Veteran students and began this new position in July 2021.

Prior to coming to MU in 2009, Aly worked at Alvernia University as a Hall Director in Housing for 3 years and Lebanon Valley College for 4 years as an Area Coordinator. In both positions she was involved in recruitment, selection, and training for Resident Assistants. She also developed a leadership class while at LVC.  Upon coming to MU in 2009 Aly worked in Housing and Residential Programs as an Area Coordinator and oversaw 4 GAs who worked as Resident Directors on the north side of campus in Gaige, Harbold, Bard and Gilbert (now Lehigh). Her favorite two days of the year are Move In Day and Move Out Day. Move In Day is an exciting time of new beginnings and she enjoys hearing the students’ chatter and being excited about the start of their school year. Move Out Day is also a favorite as it marks the closing of a year and some much needed down time to relax and get prepared for the following year.

In 2015 Aly transitioned out of Housing and became the Assistant Director of Judicial Affairs, now Student Conduct & Community Standards.  She enjoys having conversations with students about decisions they are making and the impact those decisions have on their lives. She appreciates the opportunity to connect with students who are searching for why they are here at MU and assist some of them in their development along the way.

Aly is learning as much as possible about her new role and enjoying the hustle and bustle of working in an office with a team that is focused on student engagement. She appreciates the ability at MU to let people step out of their traditional role and step into another especially covering for others in their absence or volunteering to assist other departments. She said it helps you get a feel for different positions and gives an experience one might have at a smaller college rather than a larger institution.

When not working, Aly enjoys spending time with her two sons hiking, walking in nature, swimming and going to the beach. She is a dog lover and enjoys going to the park with her dog as well as dog sitting and walking others’ dogs. Aly likes to paint abstract or scenery pictures and enjoys watching crime shows and nature documentaries.

Aly adjusted well to working virtually during this past year and a half and looks to see what can be retained from that time. Virtual classes as student conduct sanctions have been successful as they gave students the ease of accessibility for attendance. Virtual programming for the President’s Council of Gender and Sexual Diversity proved beneficial as people from other states including California and North Carolina were able to attend as were alumni. This broader base gave participants the opportunity to hear about others’ perspectives and experiences. Aly considers something a success when it works well to serve the students and if it does not, she looks to figure a better way to do it. She has been working to move the view of Student Conduct from a discipline role to one of prevention through the creation of Ville Values and educational programs such as Decision Days.

Aly has enjoyed her time at MU, fell in love with the area and university and is excited about taking on the challenge of her new role. Thank you, Aly for the many ways you serve, uphold our EPPIIC values and continue to make a difference in the lives of the students at Millersville University.
