It’s On Us Pledge Campaign 2019

It’s on Us Pledge Campaign 2019
By: Elizabeth Swantek, Title IX Coordinator

As we work towards a culture of respect on campus, the It’s On Us pledge Campaign is underway. On Friday, October 18 we hosted the It’s On Us Kick Off event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. During the event, over 120 members of our community engaged in conversation and signed the It’s On Us pledge. There was food, t-shirts, and other It’s On Us swag! The National It’s On Us week of action was held October 21-25 where the Title IX Office, CHEP, and CSIL partnered to host tabling events each day. We gifted each pledge participant with their choice of pins, stickers, hot chocolate and hot apple cider. This is just one of the many awareness events promoting bystander intervention and a culture of respect at the ‘Ville.

Background on It’s On Us:

Sexual assault is pervasive on American college campuses: 20% of women, 13% of men, and nearly half of all LGBTQ students will experience sexual assault at some point during their college career. Despite these high incidence rates, the majority of young people will never commit sexual assault during their time on campus. It’s On Us was founded in 2014 by President Barack Obama and Vice President Biden to focus on the majority and equip these students with the tools, knowledge, and skills they need to create safer college communities for all. It’s On Us is housed under the 501c3 non-profit organization Civic Nation. Its mission is to combat college sexual assault by engaging young men and changing campus culture. It’s On Us achieves its mission by teaching bystander intervention, working on college campuses, and developing the next generation of movement leaders. The work is grounded in peer-to-peer organizing and educational programs that aim to: 1) make sexual assault prevention a men’s issue; 2) equip students to be active bystanders and support survivors; and 3) develop their skills as organizers and advocates for culture change.
