Did you know that March is Women’s History Month? The month-long celebration is fairly new, dating back to the 1980s. Below is a brief timeline of how the celebration evolved over the last 38 years.
1981: Pub. L. 97-28 passed which proclaimed the week March 7, 1982, as “Women’s History Week.”
1981-1987: Congress continued to pass joint resolutions designating a week in March as “Women’s History Week.”
1987: Pub. L. 100-9 officially designated March as “Women’s History Month.”
1988-1994: Additional resolutions were requested to proclaim March as Women’s History Month each year.
1995-2016: Presidents Clinton, Bush and Obama issued annual proclamations designating March as “Women’s History Month.”
Present Day: Women’s History Month continues March 1-March 31, 2019.
