Title: Donor Relations Associate

Job location: Ephrata or Philadelphia, PA

Location Description: It is expected that this position will be based in southeastern Pennsylvania for more effective interaction with major donors in the region, and will work out of either the Ephrata, or the Philadelphia, PA MCC East Coast offices.

Travel: 40%

Job Synopsis: The Mennonite Central Committee East Coast Donor Relations Associate is responsible for helping implement the donor relations strategy for MCC East Coast by stewarding major donors involving face-to- face contact. This part of the position requires significant travel to connect with individual donors, key influencers, and other supporting groups. This position also includes publicly representing and speaking on behalf of MCC in various settings and finding ways to engage MCC constituents in strengthening support for MCC. A collaborative approach to this position is important, given the frequent needs for teamwork with both other regional staff and with MCC U.S. donor relations staff and network.

  • Bachelor’s degree (preferred; ideally in Business or a related field) or equivalent experience
  • Ability to coordinate multiple priorities, follow through on detailed tasks, and work collaboratively within a team environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking
  • Ability to relate well to a broad spectrum of people with sensitivity; to listen perceptively; and elicit appropriate responses.
  • Strong organizational, time management and follow-through skills required
  • 3-5 years of experience in fundraising or related field preferred
  • High comfort level with donor database (DPO preferred), spreadsheet usage and proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • Experience working with multifaceted organizational structures preferred
  • Working familiarity with MCC (or similar organization) preferred

Contact/Relationships: The Donor Relations Associate participates with other regional and MCC U.S. staff in implementing donor relations activities, primarily with major donors. This position needs excellent relational, customer service and phone/oral and written communication skills for frequent and extensive contact with constituents to share information, motivate participation and increase giving. This position also requires frequent verbal and written contact with a variety of staff to share information and answer questions that arise during these contacts. The incumbent needs to be a good planner and organizer, and able to initiate extensive contact and communication with donors and MCC constituent groups. The DR Associate will need to answer donor/constituent questions and concerns with sensitivity and tact.

Supervision: No direct supervision.

Complexity/Competencies:  The duties of this position require excellent organization skills and creativity to carry out donor relations activities in cooperation with regional and MCC U.S. donor relations staff. This person must be comfortable initiating phone conversations and face-to-face visits with donors and constituent groups. Database skills are needed (familiarity with Donor Perfect Online a plus) to manage donor relationships. Must be able to handle competing demands on time, and balance multiple priorities with attention to details. While this position is supervised by the East Coast DR Director, s/he will also work collaboratively with other EC staff on major donor stewardship.

Independent Action: The Donor Relations Associate must be able to work independently as well as part of a team. The individual must be a self-starter, and able to manage multiple tasks to handle the work responsibilities, to respond to requests from current and potential supporters, constituent groups and Donor Relations staff. This person must be responsible to independently follow up on assigned donor interactions in a timely manner. S/he must use discretion and good judgement in meeting with MCC constituents with a variety of perspectives and theologies to provide positive images of our work.

End Result: This position contributes to the overall fundraising program in East Coast  region and within the larger framework provided by MCC U.S. donor relations. This results in deepened constituent relationships with MCC as evidenced by meeting annual goals for financial contributions as well as number of contacts made via various channels (personal visits, phone calls, speaking engagements, email and notes). The DR Associate will be the face of MCC to many of our top donors and constituent groups. Effective work will result in strong financial support for MCC’s programs around the world, while ineffective work could reduce contributions.

Donor Engagement

  • Cultivate and deepen relationships with individual major donors (directly, and via team efforts).
  • Establish, build and maintain relationships with existing and prospective major donors with the goal of increasing annual giving and encouraging estate gifts that benefit MCC.
  • Initiate meaningful personal contacts through phone calls, email, notes etc., including acknowledging gifts made and reporting on impact of donations.
  • Prioritize face-to-face meeting with major donors and other supporters/groups
  • Achieve contact and other goals required to meet overall fundraising targets
  • With the support of MCC U.S. staff, utilize DPO and other technology-based tools for regular
    analysis and adjustment of strategies.
  • Personally acknowledge (via personal visit, note, and/or phone) gifts above set thresholds, and other gifts with special circumstances.
  • Publicly represent and speak on behalf of MCC to church and constituent groups

 Network Collaboration

  • Fully participate in and support the MCC U.S. donor relations network and activities
  • Maintain a working knowledge of trends and best practices in fundraising
  • Be knowledgeable of basic planned giving information and utilize Mennonite Foundation
    services for interested persons
  • Attend at least one professional improvement event annually


  • Participate in East Coast staff meetings, other EC or U.S. Communications Donor Relations
    (CDR) related team meetings and MCC U.S. Donor Relations network meetings.
  • Meet at least monthly with East Coast DR Director
  • Stay current with MCC activities and programs
