Boys & Girls Club of Lancaster is set to receive $250,000 in state funding to serve more youth with out-of-school learning opportunities.

The funds will enable the nonprofit organization to serve more youth with effective, data-driven programming that provides young people in the Lancaster area with academic support, future career exploration, and encourages them to build healthy, caring relationships with their peers and adult mentors, according to its CEO Karen Schloer. The money will also help support the organization’s existing annual budget of an estimated $3.5 million, she said.

“We are thrilled to be a recipient of this new investment in out-of-school time,” Schloer said. “Afterschool programs at Boys & Girls Clubs have the power to inspire kids to dream big and provide them with the support and skills they need to achieve those dreams.”

The funds come from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency’s Building Opportunity through Out-of-School Time program. Lt. Gov. Austin Davis last week announced a total of $11.5 million in grants under the program to provide structured programming for at-risk school-age youth through local and statewide projects.

“This is the first-ever allocation of money to after-school programs,” Schloer said. “The importance of out-of-school time has finally been recognized. A massive part of supporting kids and their families is before and after school, and this money is given specifically for that.”

Boys & Girls Club of Lancaster membership costs $1 per year for children ages 6 to 18.

“That dollar provides help with homework, STEM programming, art, music, gym time, a free nutritious meal for children participating in the after-school program and all the things that kids deserve to have,” Schloer said.

The organization, with clubhouse locations in Columbia and Lancaster city, is open Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and serves 300 to 400 children ages 6 through 18 in the after-school program.
