Hershey Symphony Orchestra

The Hershey Symphony Orchestra is an orchestra of accomplished musicians, voluntarily giving of their time and talents for the purpose of creating a cultural experience both for community and personal enrichment and enjoyment. The orchestra’s members come from a wide area of Eastern and Central Pennsylvania (Reading to Carlisle, Lancaster to Dauphin). The eighty-plus members are a unique group of people who range in age from teenager to senior citizen.

They rehearse weekly and perform throughout the year in a season that includes four subscription concerts at the Hershey Theatre, an annual Children’s Concert, and many special performances at community locations. Many people spend additional time helping with organizational and administrative duties. Established in 1969 as a chamber ensemble by a group of musicians at the Hershey Medical Center to relax and share their love of music with each other, the Hershey Symphony Orchestra has grown beyond the greatest expectations of those first few amateur musicians. Today the Hershey Symphony Orchestra is one of the largest volunteer, community based orchestras in the nation.

Although its heart is in Hershey, the Orchestra reaches out to provide a venue for dedicated amateur musicians in the neighboring communities of Dauphin, Lebanon, and Lancaster counties. One of the most exciting things about being around this orchestra is listening as they discuss how their musical talents have grown over the years to meet the increasing sophistication of their listeners; expanding their musical horizons as they enrich the community with beautiful music.

The volunteer orchestra members comprise a wide range of professions from students to retirees; business people to homemakers; school and private music teachers to college professors. They represent a true cross-section of the greater Hershey community. All are your neighbors and friends and they play strictly for the love of music. The Hershey Symphony Orchestra musicians thrive on the variety of music they bring to the audience at the classical concert series, the Holiday events, the annual Young People’s Concert, and at the free outdoor concerts presented every summer.
