@theartofrobertmcfetridge is 2000 art alum and former Maruafer football player who now spends his days teaching and creating his signature, photo-realistic art – typically starring athletes, including a number of NFL players. We chatted with him to learn more about his work, his time at MU and who he’s rooting for this Sunday.

1. When did you start drawing athletes?

As early as five years old. My dad, who was an artist, would sit my brothers and I down to draw in the evening. I always wanted to draw people. As I got older and started playing football, I began drawing images of athletes from Sports Illustrated magazines and football cards that my brother and I collected. Since then, I've been obsessed with photo-realism and trying to perfect my craft.

2. Who are you rooting for in the Super Bowl?

Honestly, since I'm a Raiders fan, I don't have a dog in the fight. I just want to see a competitive game. But if I had to pick one, I'll take the Patriots

3. Was there a professor who inspired you?

The art faculty at MU when I was there were great! I couldn't pick one professor that inspired me more than any other because I gained valuable knowledge and skills from multiple art professors that I still use today in my teaching and my own practice.

4. What’s the best part of teaching art?

The satisfaction I get when my students achieve awards for their art, get accepted to colleges, or get hired for jobs they're seeking after school. I know that I play a role, albeit a small one, in shaping these students as artists and adults. I'm blessed to teach AP Art and Design at William Allen High school, where I have the privilege of working with the best students.

Who are you cheering for this Sunday?
