MU Receives Digital Literacy Grant for the Second Year

The University received a $45,000 digital literacy grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry for a second year.

Unemployed and underemployed residents in the Quarryville area will continue to receive computer and digital literacy training, thanks to a grant to Millersville University. The University received a $45,000 digital literacy grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry for a second year.

MU partnered with the Quarryville Library to provide computer and digital literacy training focused on preparing participants for their job searches – especially for employment that provides family-sustaining wages. The University also hopes to increase the community’s infrastructure to provide foundations for digital literacy.

Hope Schmids, the grant manager and the Director of the Workforce Development Program at MU.

Hope Schmids, the grant manager and the Director of the Workforce Development Program at MU, says, “This grant allows us to strengthen the basic level of digital literacy within the local community, which can lead to wage and job gains for individuals and make a community more attractive to employers.”

Schmids says this grant is important for the University to receive. “As a public university, we are tasked with providing lifelong learning opportunities to residents of this region.”

The new grant will allow the University to expand the program based on insights gained from the last year. Participants can complete several online noncredit computer courses with staff support. There will also be in-person support for walk-in patrons and scheduled workshops on various topics, including an introduction to the internet, email basics and virtual meeting software.

Participants receive a certificate of completion for each course successfully completed, along with a noncredit Digital Literacy Skills Certificate from MU.

“This grant allows us to fulfill our public mission by providing a combination of in-person instruction and online course content aimed at helping participants develop basic computer knowledge and skills,” says Schmids.
