Every year on November 11, Veterans Day is observed to honor military veterans who have served in the United States Armed Forces. This year, the Millersville University Veterans Resource Center is aiming to honor those on campus who have served through various events.
The events begin on Monday, Nov. 7, at the Student Memorial Center, where students can show their support by writing thank-you cards for current student veterans. On Thursday, Nov. 10, a drop-in BBQ will be held at the Veterans Resource Center. Continuing on Friday, Nov. 11, students have another opportunity to write thank-you cards at the Student Memorial Center. All of the events will take place from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m.
The University is also holding the fifth annual Veterans’ Values and Voices: “Words in Search of our Missing Peace” on Nov. 11 to celebrate and showcase writing pieces from veterans, their families and caregivers. This year the show features poems, songs and stories regarding the challenge of returning to civilian life. The show is free and open to the public at the Ware Center from 7:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m. on Friday.
Student veteran John-Michael Fallatik says Veterans Day is important to him as he gets to honor all service members. “To me, Veterans Day means that we recognize and honor all past and present service members of the armed forces for their selfless service and sacrifices they have made for our great nation.”
Fallatik frequently uses the VRC. “The Veterans Resource Center at MU has helped me navigate the process of utilizing my VA educational benefits, provided me with a designated center for veterans, service members, and dependents to connect with and create relationships. The center has also provided access to on and off-campus resources that benefit me both academically and personally,” Fallatik says.
Air Force Veteran and Graduate Student Support Specialist Luci Lehr spends Veterans Day connecting with old military friends. “I try to attend local Veteran’s Day services to honor all present and past service members. It is also a day when old military friends from all over are active on social media; together we reconnect, reflect and share fond memories of our service years.”
Millersville University was named a 2022-2023 Military Friendly school for the 11th year in a row. Military Friendly is a way to measure an organization’s commitment to benefiting the military community. The program ensures organizations are investing in programs that benefit the veterans’ lives and create civilian opportunities for them.
