‘Ville Student Honored at National Music Competition

Ashley Torrance is majoring in Music Industry and Voice Performance at Millersville University’s Tell School of Music.

Ashley Torrance, a senior at Millersville University, placed first in the Boston chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing Student Auditions earlier this year.  Torrance is majoring in Music Industry and Voice Performance at Millersville University’s Tell School of Music.

In order to compete in the competition, Torrance submitted four videos that highlighted her ability to sing in both commercial and jazz music contexts. Her submission videos were shared with a panel of first round judges.

Torrance was thrilled to hear she would be moving into the final round of judging. With hopes of continuing her music education in graduate school, she was excited to have her finalist submission evaluated by a panel of judges who are established in the music industry, including a member of Berkley School of Music.

Finalists were asked to perform one song that would be submitted into the final round of judging. Torrance chose to perform Demi Lovato’s “Anyone.

“You always get in your head that you’re not good outside of where you are. This was a very big confidence boost that I can actually be successful outside of Millersville,” says Torrance. “In the grand scheme of things, I am good. It was a big confidence boost.”

Torrance credits her success to her voice teacher professor Brandon Martinez.

“I totally would not have been able to do it without the training that I have been provided. Professor Martinez has done me absolute wonders,” says Torrance. “I felt very confident to go into the competition after working with him for a semester.”

Martinez joined Millersville’s Tell School of Music during the pandemic, “It’s just really interesting that he can so accurately and meticulously figure out exactly what I need to do with my voice over Zoom.”

Although Torrance says her training has been beneficial even in the virtual environment, she looks forward to returning to the halls of the Tell School of Music this fall.

“We have such beautiful spaces in the music building that just make your voice, no matter what you sound like, it makes you sound incredible,” says Torrance.
