Global Sustainability is Goal of Conference

The conference will be held virtually on May 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Economic growth, decent jobs, quality education and climate change will be the topics at Millersville University’s Global Goals for Sustainable Development Conference on May 18. The free conference will be held virtually from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This one-day conference will feature keynote speakers, Caroline Fox and industry leaders from the Nuveen company, various panel presentations and an innovation showcase.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a series of ambitious objectives and targets to address poverty and hunger, fight inequality and injustice and tackle climate change by 2030.

“One of our EPPIIC values is public mission.  As a campus, we understand our role as an anchor institution and the need to enhance the economic and social well-being of our region by advancing knowledge transfer and best practices. Hosting a conference of policy- and thought-leaders to support a shared understanding of the SDGs and accelerate the adoption of best practices aligns with our public mission and our strategic goals,” says Dr. Victor DeSantis, Executive Director, Office of Community Engagement, Governmental and Economic Development.

Caroline Fox, one of the keynote speakers, has led the SDSN USA network since its launch in December 2018. Previously, she directed SDG USA, a close partner of SDSN, to develop a program of research and outreach on the SDGs in the United States, including the launch of America’s Goals for 2030, the America’s Goals Report Card and the first US SDGs State Index.

The afternoon keynote speakers feature two experienced and long-time advocates from Nuveen for socially responsible investing. Nuveen LLC., a TIAA company, has a unique lens as one of the top investors in fixed income social investing. The speakers will discuss some of the principles behind socially responsible investing and the historic growth of the investment sector. They will also highlight the attributes of companies they seek to invest in, the high standards these companies are held to and some of exemplary organizations that have made ESG principles a key part of their mission and values.

Program partners for the SDG Conference include the United Way of Lancaster County, ASSETS Lancaster, the Lancaster City Alliance, Church World Services, and the Economic Development Company of Lancaster.
