MU Launches New Degree in Media Arts Production

New Media Arts Production degree is important for students interested in the broadcasting industry.

In keeping with industry trends, Millersville University (MU) launched a new degree in Media Arts Production this fall.

The new Bachelor of Science in Media Arts Production is focused on giving students a hands-on experience to match the needs of today’s media industries. In order to stay competitive within the field, the new degree educates students who plan to move into the field with a curriculum that focuses on knowledge and skills in content creation and production processes, including pre-production, production, and post-production work. Potential career opportunities for students within the new program include serving in the news and broadcast industry as anchors, camera operators, content creators, directors, production assistants, videographers and editors to name a few related careers.

Chair of the Department of Communication and Theatre, Dr. Theresa Russell-Loretz, notes the importance of the new major for students interested in the broadcasting industry.

“The new Bachelor of Science in Media Arts Production allows Millersville University students to capitalize on the opportunities both in the classroom and in the field, particularly as we are located within one of the top 50 media markets and minutes from Rock Lititz, a community of entertainment and production companies.”

The new program is being advised by MU alumni who work in the industry as well as other industry leaders. The Industry Advisory Expert Group includes entrepreneurial individuals and freelancers, as well as those currently employed at companies such as Fox 43, WGAL8, CBS21, Aurora Films, TCMotion, Glass Entertainment and more. The advisory group provides feedback on the program’s curriculum and keeps faculty  and students informed about industry trends.

MU’s broadcasting equipment and facilities have been upgraded to ensure that the University is keeping students at the cutting-edge of the industry.

“As more and more companies recognize the need for video to tell their stories, we’re excited that the University has invested in equipment, facilities and software to ensure students are well prepared to enter the media arts field in a variety of positions, as camera operators, radio announcers, anchors, videographers, reporters, production assistants, content creators, video editors and more,” says Russell-Loretz.
