Looking for a Great College to Work For? MU Was Just Named One

Millersville was the only Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education campus to be recognized.

After applying for the first time in University history, Millersville University (MU) was recognized in three categories for the prestigious “Great Colleges to Work For” award, presented by ModernThink.

Millersville was the only Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) campus to be recognized, one of only five institutions in Pennsylvania and one of only 79 higher education institutions nationwide to be recognized this year.

“Being named to this list is another indication that Millersville University is striving to create an outstanding working environment for our employees, who are our most valuable asset as an institution of higher education,” says Dr. Daniel A. Wubah, president of Millersville.

ModernThink co-founded the Great Colleges to Work For Program in 2008.  They asked a random sample of employees across all levels and divisions at Millersville to complete an online survey relating to the quality of the workplace experience. The results of the faculty and staff identified Millersville as a workplace that excels in “Compensation & Benefits,” “Teaching Environment (faculty only),” and “Tenure Clarity & Process (faculty only).”

“Those who work here already know Millersville is a special place and we’re grateful to be recognized on a national level,” says Diane Copenhaver, Executive Director of Human Resources at Millersville. “A huge amount of credit needs to go to our faculty and staff for taking the time to complete the survey. This is a time-consuming process, done for the first time, that needed to be completed as the campus was transitioning to online-only classes. It took a lot of commitment, but I wouldn’t expect anything less from our faculty and staff.”

The “Great Colleges to Work For” program provides senior-level administrators and academic leaders with insights on the quality of the workplace experience for faculty and staff and the competitiveness of their policies and benefits.

At the core of the program is a two-part assessment process: a faculty/staff survey and an institutional audit capturing information detailing various institution demographics, policies, practices and infrastructure.

Along with the potential national recognition that comes with participation, responders also receive three topline reports summarizing key results from your faculty/staff survey, as well as aggregate results from the institution questionnaire submissions. It allows institutions to understand the dynamics and influences that are having the greatest impact on their own campus culture and that ultimately are shaping the future of the higher education community.

“Millersville is an institution built on its EPPIIC values,” Copenhaver said. “We pride ourselves on living up to those values every day and are happy to know where we stand with our employees.”
