Millersville University recently launched a new peer mentorship program for first-year students, and expanded the alumni career mentoring program through a partnership with Mentor Collective. The program matched 400 students to peer mentors in just three days after its July launch.
Through this program, first-year students have the opportunity to learn from a peer mentor who helps them navigate the challenges of starting college. Peer mentoring is a high-impact practice shown to increase students’ sense of belonging and drive student success. Mentors receive training on how to give useful guidance to new students. Students can use Mentor Collective’s discussion guides and goal-setting activities to foster meaningful conversations with their mentors throughout the year.
“Mentoring is a partnership that will pay dividends for our students who are mentored, as well as for those who do the mentoring,” said Dr. Daniel A. Wubah, president of Millersville. “What a great opportunity for our upper-division students to be able to share their experiences with and support our first-year students.”
Amid the change and uncertainty surrounding this fall, the peer mentorship program provides a valuable support network for new students. “The mentoring program has helped me tremendously with the whole transition from high school into college,” said first-year student Jeyda Bermudez. “I am extremely grateful for my mentor, and I love the program. My mentor has given me endless advice ranging from personal issues to school issues. He has helped me grow and figure out the right path for me. Not only do you make a life-long friend, but you are guided in the right path to making your future a bright one.”
