What started out as a project in Millersville University (MU) alum Kerrie Snavely’s ’77 freshwater biology class has turned into a new initiative that the recycling green team at Conestoga Valley High School got involved. This program led to the 2019 Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence.
CV Recycles, the school’s recycling awareness and action campaign kicked off with the creation of a 6-foot-tall sign spelling “RECYCLES” made from metal mesh and filled with recyclable materials. It’s grown to collect enough recyclables that are equivalent to the amount of energy needed to power a convenience store for a year and offset the same amount of greenhouse gases as 10 acres of forest land.
”The award represents the work my kids do. I am so thrilled to know I have the privilege to teach kids about being good stewards to the environment,” says Snavely.
One individual and 17 organizations, businesses and local governments in Pennsylvania were selected by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to receive the prestigious Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence. The award recipients were chosen from 28 applicants. Any individual, business, school, government agency, or community organization in Pennsylvania is eligible to apply. DEP evaluates projects for their degree of environmental protection, innovation, partnership efforts, economic impact, consideration of climate change and sustainability results achieved.
