Millersville Celebrates Earth Week with Announcement of Positive Energy Awards

Supporting Global Goals

Millersville University’s commitment to sustainability will be on full display today, April 23 during the University’s annual Earth Week events at the Lombardo Welcome Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. All are encouraged to stop by for information, games, prizes, giveaways, electronics recycling and walking tacos.

During the day’s festivities, the winners of Millersville University’s Positive Energy Award program will be announced around noon. Applications were submitted earlier this spring, and four projects were selected to receive $2,500 to support their idea.

These projects fit within the Global Goals sustainability framework, which is designed to find local solutions to global problems including quality education, gender equality, clean water and sanitation, climate action, sustainable cities and communities, and others.

“We received numerous great applications, which made scoring difficult, but we’re pleased with the results and are looking forward to the great work that these projects will accomplish,” says Sustainability Director Chris Steuer.

This year’s sustainability champions will also be announced April 23.

A number of MU community partners will be present at the Lombardo Welcome Center to share information and giveaways focused on topics ranging from recycling to how to get involved with climate change on a local level. Partners will include Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority (LCSWMA), Sunrise Movement, Red Rose Transit, Eurofins Lancaster Laboratories, Global Shapers and others.

Sycamore International will be on site to accept electronics for recycling. Desktops and laptops, tablets, phone systems, printers and many other items will be accepted. CRT televisions, hazardous waste and compressed gas canisters will not be collected.
