Science Olympiad This Weekend

1,000 people expected on campus for the competition.

Local students who love science, technology, engineering and math will flood Millersville University’s (MU) campus on March 2 for the 12th annual Regional Science Olympiad event that will take place from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. This event brings about 1,000 people to MU’s campus including middle school students, high school students, parents and teachers to see students participate in science competitions. The team rooms and events will be located in McComsey Hall, Caputo Hall, Roddy Hall and the Student Memorial Center on MU’s campus.

“The event has two divisions, B-middle school division and C-high school division. Each division has 23 events that teams will compete in throughout the day. The events span all areas of STEM from building cars powered by mouse traps to interpreting information from fossils,” says Dr. Daniel Albert, assistant chemistry professor at MU.

This year, 22 schools will be competing in the B-Division and 31 schools will be competing in the C-Division. Each team can have up to 15 members, so there will be nearly 800 students on MU’s campus participating.

Albert will be joined by professors Kathryn Allen and Talor Walsh to organize the event. Many faculty and students participate by running specific events and volunteering throughout the day.

Local science teachers, MU faculty, MU students and local volunteers interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education will judge the events. Each of the 23 events in each division has an event supervisor who is in charge of running and scoring the event.

Awards are given to the top few performing teams in each event and to the top few performing teams overall. The top few teams in both divisions move onto the state competition on April 27.
