Millersville Offers Many Tools to Help Students Reach Academic Success

Struggling in a class? There’s a tutor for that!

As students head back to campus for the spring semester, they come with a new resolve to make it the most accomplished semester of their academic career, and Millersville University (MU) offers many resources to help them do just that. From tutoring services to the writing center, and even student workshops, there are a plethora of tools available at no cost to students to ensure their academic success on campus.

The Tutoring Center is the one-stop-shop for all student tutoring. Located on the third floor of Lyle Hall in room 344, the center focuses on providing tutors for every program on campus. These tutors are students who have received a B+ or better in the subjects they tutor, making them qualified candidates for the job. There are three kinds of tutoring options available to students including one-on-one tutoring, group tutoring and walk-in tutoring.

One-on-one tutoring is the most flexible, as the tutor and the tutee decide on a time and location to meet that is optimal for both of them. These meetings are typically one hour a week, and are conducted based on what specific topics the tutee is struggling with. Group tutoring is run similarly, however it is with a group of students learning together during a scheduled time, instead of just one-on-one. This type of collaborative effort can be beneficial for students, as they’re able to work with their peers to understand the subject they’re learning.

Walk-in or “drop in” tutoring is another option for students, and focuses on having tutors available at a scheduled time and place. Walk in tutoring for this semester will begin on January 28, 2019 and continue until finals week. Departments that offer drop-in tutoring include biology, business, chemistry, computer science, earth science, economics, math and physics.

“I tutored a student in InDesign [in order to help him] format his stories in a variety of ways. I enjoyed how confident I felt in my education at Millersville to [be able to] teach another student how to use graphic design programs,” said senior and public relations major Alex Mossaidis.

Another option available to students that is similar to drop-in tutoring is the writing center. Located on the first floor of the Francine G. McNairy Library & Learning Forum in room 106, the center focuses on providing help and feedback to students who are struggling with any stage of the writing process. Open Mondays through Thursdays from 1-9 p.m., and Sundays from 6-9 p.m., appointments can be set up by calling the center at 717-871-7389 or stopping by the center.

Student workshops are another a great way for students to improve academic success overall. These workshops focus on topics such as note taking, study skills, time management and organization skills, critical thinking, succeeding with ADHD, writing skills and much more. Offered from 12-1 p.m. throughout the semester, a full schedule of these workshops are available below.

MU’s commitment to student success is undeniable. From the various types of tutoring, to the writing center, and even student workshops, the many resources offered to students ensure that they can make the most out of their college education.
