Millersville Opens New Nanotechnology Lab

Larger lab benefits science majors, particularly those with an emphasis in nanofabrication manufacturing technology.

Since spring 2017, the creation of an upgraded nanotechnology lab has been in the works. Built in Osburn Hall, the new lab has moved from a small storage closet to a large classroom. The lab opened at the start of the spring semester. This move benefits science majors, particularly those with an emphasis in nanofabrication manufacturing technology.

Nanotechnology is the equipment used to research and experiment with particles ranging from 1-100 nanometers.  Quality equipment in a quality facility is essential for student success in this field.

“The new lab provides a space to complete their course requirements that did not exist previously, and it will supplement curriculum currently being delivered at Penn State,” said Dr. Mark Atwater, associate professor in the applied engineering, safety and technology students (AEST) program. “The lab will also be used to perform research in conjunction with undergraduate and graduate students, and faculty in the AEST department and across campus.”

Plumbing, a fume hood and casework had to be designed in order to create this new lab and added to the equipment the department already had. Designing and budgeting for this project were also large hurdles the team had to overcome in order to create the best possible lab resource for students.

“This remodel establishes an entirely new capability to our department, and the hope is that it will support more research, external funding and industrial collaboration. Getting students involved in multidisciplinary hands-on experiences is a core benefit of the remodel and the space will also be amenable to variations in use as our program needs and research interests evolve,” concluded Atwater.
