Dr. Richard L. Frerichs, ’64, has been named the 2018 Millersville Community-University Parade Grand Marshal. Frerichs will be honored at the 2018 parade during MU’s homecoming on Saturday, October 13. The parade kicks-off at 9 a.m. The Grand Marshal is selected each year based on his or her significant contributions to the Millersville community. All nominees must live or work in the Millersville community.
Frerichs was chosen because of his extensive service to both Millersville University and the Penn Manor School District. Frerichs is professor emeritus of educational foundations at Millersville University, after serving 36 years (1968-2004). He also served the University as dean of resident life, dean of men, associate director of financial aid, chair of the Department of Educational Foundations and assistant coach of track and field/cross country. Frerichs continues to play a role in MU athletics. In recent years, he has assisted in securing athletic fundraising sponsorships for MU, and he has been the “Voice of the Marauders” at MU football games for 40 years and basketball games for 30 years. Frerichs also currently serves as a member of the University’s Council of Trustees, as an appointee by PA’s Governor. He has served as a member of the MU Foundation Board of Directors, and has closely been affiliated with the MU Alumni Association, serving as president, president-elect and past president, as well as holding positions on several alumni association committees and initiatives, as well as chairing MU’s Athletic Hall of Fame Committee for a number of years.
Beyond Millersville University, Frerichs, served as president of the Penn Manor School Board for over 15 years, and has also been a past president and member of the Pennsylvania School Boards Association, a member of the board of directors for the Pennsylvania Association of Colleges and Teacher Educators, a member of Lancaster County Campaign Against Sexual Exploitation of Children Task Force, chair of the Literary Council of Lancaster County, member of the Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit Board, the local chapter of Phi Delta Kappa, a member of the EdPAC and Insurance Trust Boards, to name a few. His accolades include Millersville University’s highest honor, that of the President’s Medallion, which honors and acknowledges contributions to citizens of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and their commitment to the values of higher education, the MU Alumni Association’s Distinguished Service Award and their Outstanding Volunteer Service Award; he also received Phi Delta Kappa’s Distinguished Educator Award, Millersville University’s Sara Lindsley Person of the Year Award and is a past inductee to MU’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
Frerichs has also been active in local politics, serving as past secretary and committeeman for the Penn Manor Republican Committee and a member of the Representative Ryan Aument’s Education Advisory Committee.
Frerichs earned a master’s in education degree from Millersville in 1969 and his Ed.D. from the University of Delaware in 1995. Frerichs and his late wife Marsha, have two daughters, Kimberlee and Melissa.
