MU’s Master of Social Work – Among Best

Preparing Social Workers to Respond to Needs

MSW-main-pic“U.S. News & World Report” has ranked the joint Millersville-Shippensburg University master of social work program 141st out of 217 master of social work programs accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the Council on Social Work Education.

“This ranking is a great honor,” said Dr. Heather Girvin, social work. “We have partnered with Shippensburg to create an innovative and high-quality program that is accessible, affordable and responsive to the needs of our students.  The hard-working faculty and bright, diligent students in our program are to be commended for this achievement.”

The rankings are based on peer assessment surveys sent to deans, other administrators and/or faculty at accredited degree programs or schools. Only fully accredited programs in good standing during the survey period are ranked and those schools with the highest average scores appear in the rankings.

“Our advanced generalist focus prepares master’s level social workers to respond to the needs of individuals and families while simultaneously advocating for systems changes to address barriers to adequate care and social injustices,” said Dr. Karen Rice, chair of social work.

Shippensburg and Millersville, in a historic joint arrangement, began offering the MSW program in fall 2006. It includes a mix of traditional campus based instruction and distance education technology and allows students to take courses at the campus of their choice.
