Between now and April 11 the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) is hosting a competition to reduce energy consumption. PASSHE Unplugged is a competition measuring electrical energy consumption reduction over a three-week period. At Millersville University, the campaign accompanying PASSHE Unplugged is ‘Ville Unplugged.
MU is competing against other State System universities to see which one can save the most energy over a three-week period. The winning university will be determined by the percentage of electrical reduction achieved compared to the baseline of the campus.
‘Ville Unplugged promotes awareness of energy use among faculty, staff and students to encourage behaviors that conserve energy. Throughout the three-week period, student organizations and other university groups will be hosting events including an open mic, acoustic (unplugged) guitar night, a candlelight prayer service and meditation session, a black light ping pong tournament and a low light video game night.
‘Ville Unplugged encourages students and faculty to post actions they are taking to conserve energy on twitter using the hashtag #unplugMU. Each week, one person will be selected from those who have tweeted energy-saving ideas to win a $25 University Store gift card. A winner will be selected from the weekly winners for the grand prize of a $100 University Store gift card.

Student organizations that host events are encouraged to notify Chris Steuer, sustainability manager, to raise awareness about events, receive event support and ensure coordination across activities.

I believe that this is a great event that will help spread awareness as well as reducing our energy usage.
I had sent an email to Chris Steuer, the sustainability manager about possibly reducing the amount of lights we use in the day time, which is already in progress in thinking of a way to possibly install daylight sensors or something.
In the meantime, what we can do as faculty and students is to only keep some of the lights on in the classroom. Most classrooms have light switches that only switch on a certain scattered amount of lights. If we only use some and not all, it will allow for the sustainability section to make up a plan for energy reduction.
