Millersville University art professor and artist Dorothy Frey will lead a Sept. 13 outdoor landscape painting event, hosted by the Conestoga River Club, to celebrate the Conestoga being named Pennsylvania River of the Year. The event, scheduled for 1 to 4 p.m. at Millersville University’s Creek Lodge, is open to the public free of charge. Frey, who grew up on a farm in Lancaster County, received her BFA from Millersville University and her MFA from American University in Corciano, Italy, and Washington D.C., studying painting, drawing, art history and printmaking. Her work explores the connection between memory, place and personal history through intimate depictions of home living spaces, still life arrangements and landscapes from her family farm.
Frey is an associate professor of art at Millersville University. She is represented by Bowery Gallery in New York. Her work has also been included in shows at the Demuth Museum and Lancaster Galleries in Lancaster; Art at Kings Oaks in Newtown, Pa.; and Gross McCleaf Gallery in Philadelphia.
The Conestoga River was named the 2026 Pennsylvania River of the Year by the Pennsylvania Organization for Watersheds and Rivers. It was selected for this honor in recognition of the extensive conservation and restoration efforts underway, the strong community partnerships working to improve water quality and its significance as both an ecological corridor and recreational asset for South Central Pennsylvania.
The Conestoga River Club nominated the Conestoga River and received a $15,000 Leadership Grant to help fund a slate of year-long activities. The Club – along with Millersville University and the Borough of Millersville – is planning events and activities to honor the recognition.
