Alumna Awarded for YA Novel

“Allow yourself to learn and grow alongside your characters, because if you’re anything like me, you’re going to write a lot of bad pages that will never see the light of day,” Bandy shares.

Millersville University alumna Lindsay (Fisher) Bandy ’06 has been recognized for her work in young adult literature by the Pennsylvania Library Association. Her novel, “Inevitable Fate,” received the Carolyn W. Field Honor, coming in second to the Carolyn W. Field Award, which recognizes outstanding books by authors or illustrators living in Pennsylvania and is presented annually.

Bandy earned a bachelor’s degree in English and history from Millersville University and has since become a dedicated author of young adult fiction. In addition to being an author, Bandy serves as the coordinator of the award-winning Teen SummerZine program for teens through the Library System of Lancaster County, offers writing workshops at schools and libraries and volunteers with the Eastern PA Chapter of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators.

Although Bandy specializes in young adult literature, she explores the boundaries of genre by blending elements of romance, suspense and ancient mythology to create nuanced stories.

“Strict genre lines are great for marketing departments, but not always for artists,” Bandy says. “In my work, and in my life, I often find myself most comfortable in the gray areas, actively seeking balance and meaning. I enjoy reading thought-provoking YA that crosses over into the adult market. I like the way mythology transcends time, so I have fun finding ways to bring ancient stories into the present day with a twist. I’m a hopeless romantic who dislikes the ‘romance novel’ genre, so I like to blend a good love story with creepy, timeless and suspenseful elements to up the stakes.”

Bandy encourages aspiring authors to focus on understanding the fundamentals of novel structure, writing stories that are personally meaningful and remaining patient throughout the creative process. She emphasizes that writing is a long-term commitment rather than a linear career path and encourages writers to seek feedback, stay resilient and continue learning.

“Allow yourself to learn and grow alongside your characters, because if you’re anything like me, you’re going to write a lot of bad pages that will never see the light of day,” Bandy shares. “You are even going to write a lot of good pages that just don’t work and eventually must be cut.

“Finding other writers who can offer feedback and encouragement is important because they will help you to become a better writer while also ensuring you don’t give up on yourself. Value everything you learn and everyone who helps you along the way. Being a writer is a lifestyle, not a factory job. It will be difficult, and it will be worth it, so keep going.”
