Meet MU’s Student Trustee: Bridget Lau

Bridget Lau, a special education major, has been appointed as the student trustee to Millersville University’s Council of Trustees.

Every Pennsylvania State-owned university has its own governing board, a Council of Trustees comprising 11 members who are nominated and appointed by the governor. Student trustees are nominated, approved by the chancellor and appointed by the governor. Bridget Lau, a special education major, has been appointed as Millersville University’s student trustee until her graduation in May of 2026. In this role, she is a voting member of the council and represents the student body.

Following in the footsteps of her friend and former student trustee Allison Ross, Lau was inspired to be a voice for Millersville students. Lau praises Ross for her accomplishments as a student representative, such as being an integral part of the vote to move tuition to a flat rate for the 2024-2025 academic year.

“Ross was my hero,” Lau says. “She shared many of the interesting opportunities she had while serving on the Council of Trustees. I saw the incredible influence a student’s voice had on the decisions made for Millersville and I also wanted to be the one to give these members the perspective of a student enrolled and living on campus.”

Lau believes the student trustee’s role is critical to ensuring that Millersville’s student body has a representative who provides a perspective of student experiences and opinions during decision-making processes.

“The students are always our priority and having a voice to help steer the conversations about creating a better environment for them is imperative to the University’s success,” says Lau.

As the student trustee, Lau has many responsibilities, including sitting in on monthly and quarterly meetings to advise council members on student matters, meeting with the president of the Student Government Association and the president of the University, Dr. Daniel A. Wubah to discuss ways to improve Millersville University. “These meetings have proven to be very productive in meeting our desires for Millersville, and we work to problem-solve any issues our students face,” she says.

In addition to her responsibilities, Lau has the opportunity to collaborate with the trustees from the other PASSHEE universities. In October 2024, Lau joined her fellow trustees on a tour of the State Capitol, where she met key legislators, whose decisions directly affect the University.

“It was incredible to hear just how important our students are to these members of the House of Representatives and the State Senate. This is an opportunity that led to many great connections and resources,” Lau reports.

Serving on the trustees has given Lau insight into how the education system works. “As a future special educator, I need to know how much work goes into improving our students’ education and experiences,” Lau shares. “I look forward to collaborating with my local boards of education and my future school board. This experience has given me so much knowledge that I may use in my future career.”

Lau has many hopes for her tenure as Millersville’s student trustee. One of her primary objectives is to help to improve the University’s dining program. After speaking with the new director, Daryl Matthews, Lau is optimistic about his goals. “His formation of a student group dedicated to helping facilitate the needs of the students was the first step toward more student involvement within our dining program,” she says.

“This position means everything to me. It is an opportunity to better educate myself and give back to the university that is working hard to make my college experience great. I am glad to hear from any students who may have some great ideas of their own,” Lau concludes.
