Breathe Easy with a Rewarding Career

Covid accentuated the need for respiratory therapists because of the increase in patients, extremely long hours, and high stress levels.

The demand for respiratory therapists has surged in recent years, driven by several factors. An aging population, increasing prevalence of respiratory illnesses, and advancements in pulmonary medical technology have contributed to this growing need. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic underscored the critical role of respiratory therapists in caring for critically ill patients, further emphasizing the profession’s importance.

“Covid accentuated the need for respiratory therapists because of the sudden increase in respiratory patients, extremely long working hours, and high-stress levels,” says Elaine Chrissos, Program Director of the Respiratory Therapy Program at Millersville. “We have had an ongoing shortage of respiratory therapists before the pandemic.”

Millersville’s program offers two paths within the biology department:

  • Biology/Respiratory Therapy: This rigorous 4 ½ year track leads to a Bachelor of Science in Biology degree and a certificate in Respiratory Therapy, providing a strong scientific foundation for your career.
  • Allied Health/Respiratory Therapy: This 3 ½ year program allows you to enter the workforce sooner and earn a Bachelor of Science in Allied Health Technology and a certificate in Respiratory Therapy.

All students complete rigorous coursework before starting a challenging and rewarding 19-month professional phase. During this clinical practicum, students rotate through healthcare facilities like UPMC Lititz, UPMC Harrisburg and Lancaster General Hospital, gaining invaluable hands-on experience.

“Nothing is more rewarding than possessing the knowledge needed to save lives and being a small percentage of the population that can nourish the sick, care for the weak and revive those who have lost all hope to live,” says Morgan Klaiss, senior respiratory therapy student at Millersville. “Of course, the job security that comes with being in a field that is in dire need of help is also a rewarding thought knowing people will need me right away.”

Millersville University boasts a long and respected history in respiratory therapy education. The program has been continuously accredited since its inception in 1982.

“Many people are unaware of the vital role RTs play in patient care,” says Chrissos. “These highly skilled professionals are often at the forefront of critical care, working alongside doctors and nurses to ensure patients breathe easily. Millersville University’s program equips you with the knowledge, skills, and experience to thrive in this dynamic and rewarding field.”
