Millersville Senior Awarded National Medical Laboratory Scholarship

Ty Taylor plans to graduate in May and then pursue her dream in the medical field.

Tytiana Taylor, a senior at Millersville University, is one of five medical laboratory science students nationwide recently awarded a $2,000 scholarship by the American Proficiency Institute. She plans to graduate in May from Millersville and sit for her board of certification for medical laboratory science and then pursue her dream in the medical field.

Taylor, who is a biology major with a concentration in medical technology and a minor in athletic coaching, says she was inspired to get into the field because of a family member. “I first realized what clinical laboratory science was when my grandmother was admitted to a hospital,” says Taylor. “A sample of her blood was taken to the lab to diagnose cardiac arrest. Laboratory scientists have a direct impact on the lives of many patients.”

Associate professor of biology, Dr. Brent Horton and assistant professor of biology, Dr. Laura Ramos Sepulveda played a role in Taylor’s journey. “Dr. Brent Horton has made an impact on me as a student at Millersville and he has always had confidence in me and made sure that I have confidence in myself,” says Taylor. “Dr. Laura Ramos, my professor as well as my advisor, kept me on track to succeed and has always spoke positivity in me.”

In addition to graduating from Millersville with a bachelor’s, Taylor will also graduate with a certificate from Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center’s medical laboratory science program. The MLS program is a requirement for her degree and students have to apply to different hospitals to be accepted.

API President, Daniel C. Edson talked about the scholarships, “It is inspiring to learn of the tenacity of these students in reaching their goal of a clinical laboratory career. We are pleased to provide these scholarships to assist in these journeys.”

Now in its 15th year, the API Scholarship Program provides funding to students as they pursue their clinical laboratory science education. “The future of the profession shines bright with these determined students,” says Edson.
