The 2021-22 Conrad Nelson Artist’s Lecture by artist Michelle Stuart is scheduled for Tuesday, February 8 at 7 p.m. Organized by the Department of Art & Design at Millersville University, the lecture is a free online event.
Renowned sculptor, Land, and Earth Artist, Michelle Stuart made massive sculptural installations in the Niagara Gorge, Columbia Gorge, and Turku Archipelago. Since the 1960s, Stuart has also made encaustic paintings, drawings, prints, handmade books and indoor sculptural installations. She is recognized for pioneering the use of nontraditional, organic materials in art, such as earth, wax, seeds and plants. Her work explores the physicality of materials as well as cultural and scientific issues pertaining to site, ranging from history, biology, and botany to astronomy, and archaeology. Stuart was also a founder of the storied journal Heresies in the 1970s, a feminist publication devoted to art, politics, and history. She helped create the Women’s Art Registry in New York, a grassroots method of disseminating information about under-recognized women artists. The photographic image has been an ancillary part of her work in the past; it is currently the primary medium as seen in her exhibition at Eckert Art Gallery Penzance (Cornwall) to Paddington (London) (January 20-March 4, 2022) in which the artist documented her travel through time, space, weather, and light, along the passage of a full English train line.

Michelle Stuart studied in Mexico, France, and in New York at The New School for Social Research. She has exhibited widely.
