Recent updates from Drs. Downey, Frank, Jester and Wood.

Dr. Dennis B.  Downey, Emeritus professor of history, has been elected to the Steering Committee of the Western Pennsylvania Disability History and Action Consortium and is spearheading efforts to create a statewide disability history research collaborative.  Downey and his son Thomas were featured recently in a Vice News report on the crisis in disability services in the Commonwealth.

Dr. Jennifer Frank, assistant professor in the School of Social Work, recently received a $8,000 award from the PASSHE Faculty Professional Development Council. Her proposal was “Stepping Stones Pen Pal Project: Cultivating Human Connection to Address Social Isolation.” Frank’s project was selected from more than 100 proposals.

The project includes a pen pal letter exchange between social work and sociology students with agency participants from three local community service agencies.

Dr. Jennifer Jester, assistant professor in the Music Business Technology Program and coordinator of the Live Audio Production concentration at the Tell School of Music, has been named a recipient of the Modern Band Higher Education Fellowship. The honor is from the nationally renowned Little Kids Rock Program based in New Jersey. The 2021 Modern Band Fellowship took place July 25-31 at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado.

In addition to the weeklong professional development opportunity, fellows also receive modern band instruments for use with their music education majors; access to the shared syllabi of all other Modern Band Higher Education fellows; membership in the Little Kids Rock educator network which supplies ongoing professional development opportunities; and curricular resources and networking opportunities with other educators interested in culturally responsive, student-centered and inclusive music education.

Dr. Jennifer Wood, associate professor of communication & theatre, was recently appointed by the Lancaster County Commissioners to a two-year term to the Library System of Lancaster of County Board of Directors for a two-year term.
