There’s nothing better than when students unite for a good cause, especially when it’s to better the community. The Big Event does just that by providing a platform that unites both students and community members for a common cause.
Hosted by the Student Government Association (SGA), this year’s event is taking place on Saturday, March 30 at 8:30 a.m. As a one-day community service project run entirely by students, MU’s event was initially inspired by Texas A&M’s annual “The Big Event,” which was started in 1982.
“The ultimate goal [of The Big Event] is to further develop positive town relations and say thank you to the surrounding borough community for supporting the University and its students,” said SGA Vice President of Advocacy and Outreach, Abbey Ford.
On the day of the event, students will break up into groups to complete various service tasks including preparing meals for Penn Manor School District families struggling with cancer at a local church, cleaning up the Conestoga River, completing basic landscaping for Lancaster Emergency Medical Services (EMS), cleaning the Hub and Campus Cupboard and installing rain barrels at local businesses to help with storm water infrastructure.
“I’m proud of how many students have signed up to participate [and] I look forward to seeing how students engage with community members and create bonds with them,” said Ford.
