Good News for Pre-Med Students at Millersville University

The agreement acknowledges that MU offers a curriculum that successfully prepares students for medical school.

Millersville University of Pennsylvania (MU) has announced a “Guaranteed Admissions Interview Program” with Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM). Qualified MU students will have an advantage for admission into medical school through this agreement. Dr. Daniel Wubah, MU president; and John Rocovich, chairman and treasurer of the VCOM board of directors at the private non-profit osteopathic medical school on the campus of Virginia Tech, signed the agreement on March 8, 2019.

“I’m personally familiar with the quality of VCOM’s program and I’m delighted to help bring this opportunity to the students of Millersville University,” says Wubah, who serves on the board of directors of VCOM. “Since arriving at Millersville last summer I’ve been extremely impressed with our students and I know they’ll be strong competitors for VCOM’s openings.”

“VCOM receives over 11,000 applications annually for about 500 seats across their campuses,” says Dr. Mike Jackson, dean of the College of Science and Technology at MU. “The agreement acknowledges that MU offers a curriculum that successfully prepares students for medical school and thus are a good fit for study at VCOM. It’s a wonderful opportunity for students to be guaranteed an admissions interview to medical school prior to graduating from MU.”

Between the diminished opportunities for medical training in the United States and the chronic shortage of physicians in many rural areas, MU and VCOM want to create a cooperative program by which qualified candidates who have demonstrated high achievement are guaranteed an admissions interview at VCOM if they successfully follow a distinctive academic protocol.

Millersville students may graduate with any baccalaureate degree while satisfying medical school pre-requisites and admissions criteria, including doing well on the Medical College Admission Test (MCAT). Those students who qualify for the guaranteed admissions interview program will interview on the VCOM campus with three faculty/administrators and participate in the designated interview day activities.

The Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) is a four-year osteopathic medical school offering the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree. Osteopathic physicians are licensed in every state to practice the full scope of medicine including examining patients, diagnosing illness, writing prescriptions, performing surgery, as well as providing musculoskeletal manipulation. Osteopathic physicians enter every field of medicine from family practice to neurosurgery. The majority of osteopathic physicians; however, practice primary care, with approximately one-fourth of the profession providing care in small communities and rural areas.
