Millersville University (MU) will host the 11th Relay for Life Event Feb. 22-23 from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. The Relay For Life Club at MU plans this event throughout the year. Many people who participate relay for family and friends who have cancer or are fighting the disease. Every dollar that is donated to Relay for Life goes to the American Cancer Society to help support those going through treatments, to raise awareness and to find a cure.
“I relay for those who cannot, and to hopefully one day only have to honor those who have won the fight, and not those who have lost. I relay for Miss Berta, a close family friend and mother figure for me as a child, who I lost to cancer when I was around the age of 13; Cornell, my family dog who I lost to bladder cancer two years back and in honor of my Grammy who beat cancer,” says Madison Stoutland, co-president of the Relay For Life Committee.
This year, the goal for MU’s Relay For Life event is to raise $25,000 for the American Cancer Society. This goal has already been surpassed by a couple hundred dollars before the event has taken place. There are currently 39 teams signed up to attend the relay this year, but teams are joining every day. Organizations from Greek life, the Student Government Association, Expressions, MU dance, club athletics teams and others participate in this event.
Many annual events at MU’s Relay for Life will be happening again this year including the Miss Relay event, dodgeball tournament, jail fundraiser and a new live game show. In addition, the traditional luminaria ceremony will take place during the relay.
Interested in joining the relay? MU students can sign up and join their team at www.tinyurl.com/murelay19. To sign up, participants will pay a $15 donation that goes towards the American Cancer Society.
If you cannot attend the relay but still want to get involved, reach out and join the committee to help plan awareness events throughout the semester. Also, you can create a team and fundraise, or simply raise awareness by influencing friends to sign up.
