Located on McCollough Street, the Witmer Health Services building at Millersville University (MU) has always been an important medical resource on campus. From earlier use of the building as an infirmary to its updated use as Health Services, this center is staffed with physicians, nurse practitioners and registered nurses who are dedicated to student success.
The Witmer Building was constructed in 1967, to function as an infirmary/small hospital. It was open seven days a week, 24 hours a day, and had the capability to house sick students overnight in hospital beds. Over time, it became apparent that the university did not need long term housing for sick students, leading it to function more as a Family Practice type of out-patient care and treatment facility.
With this shift in services offered to students, the name “infirmary” became outdated and inaccurate, often causing confusion regarding the type of services provided. This change from infirmary to Health Services has created more structured hours, with scheduled appointment times, similarly to how doctor’s offices are set up.
The mission also changed focus. “As a resource that was built over five decades ago, the mission of Health Services has grown to meet the needs of the diverse population it serves. Health Services is dedicated to ensuring a healthy living environment at the university, supporting students in achieving academic success, personal growth and independence, while promoting a healthy campus community through providing high quality, holistic care, health education and prevention, making it the valuable resource it is today,” says Joanne Ocasio, University Nurse Supervisor.
