The Conrad Nelson Artist Lecture featuring artist Amy Sherald will be the highlight of a month packed with events celebrating Black History at Millersville University (MU). The Conrad Nelson Artist Lecture will take place on Feb. 19 from 7 – 9 p.m. at the Winter Visual and Performing Arts Center, Clair Performance Hall.
Sherald is known for her stylized portraits of African Americans. In February 2018, Sherald unveiled her official portrait of former First Lady Michelle Obama, commissioned for the Smithsonian National Portrait Gallery in; Washington, D.C.
Sherald holds a master’s degree in fine arts in painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art and a bachelor’s of arts degree in painting from Clark-Atlanta University. She was a Spelman College International Artist-in-Residence in Portobelo, Panama in 1997. Sherald was the first woman to win the Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition grand prize; an accompanying exhibition, The Outwin in 2016. She has been on tour since 2016 and opened at the Kemper Museum, Kansas City, Missouri in October 2017.
