Want to see beautiful costumes, spectacular dancing and support children with developmental needs? “Be the Change” is a dance benefit performance coming up Saturday, Feb. 2, 2019 at the Winter Center on Millersville University’s campus. The performance will benefit Excentia’s S. June Smith Center in Lancaster.
“We deeply appreciate our experiential learning partnership with Excentia’s S. June Smith Center and we are grateful for the volunteer and employment opportunities they consistently provide each year to our student volunteers, interns and recent graduates,” said Melissa Wardwell, director of Experiential Learning and Career Management (ELCM). “These kinds of interactions and experiences are especially meaningful to our students and help with the development of their professional skills and career-readiness competencies.”
Alpha Sigma Alpha (ASA), ELCM and Encore Dance Center are collaborating to co-sponsor the benefit. Support for the performance will provide therapeutic and educational services for children with developmental needs, as well as promote the full inclusion of individuals with disabilities in the arts community.
“The sisters of Alpha Sigma Alpha are excited to continue to support the S. June Smith center through this phenomenal event,” says Alexis Greenberg from ASA. “This program is an amazing opportunity for us to raise money so the center can continue to do the extraordinary work they’ve always done.”
The groups performing on Saturday include the emme dance collective, Encore Dance Center Performance Company, Essence – Millersville University, Expressions – Millersville University, Hooley School of Irish Dance, the Millersville University Dance Team and NetCo Dance Company.
“The Millersville University Dance Team is honored to be asked to perform at this year’s ‘Be the Change’ event,” says Megan Webb, MU Dance Team president. “This performance opportunity allows us to share our love of dance with the community and the Excentia’s S. June Smith Center. It is opportunities like ‘Be the Change’ that remind us why we love to dance and perform. This show is extremely special because we get to raise awareness for an amazing organization and recognize exceptional children. Dance will always be an inclusive art form, and ‘Be the Change’ gives every member of the community the chance to dance!”

This is the third “Be the Change” performance. Other performances were held in 2014 and 2016.
