Veterans Day takes place on November 11, a day that honors military veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces. There are currently 143 veterans and 274 total GI Bill recipients, including the dependents or spouses/widows of veterans, attending Millersville University (MU). MU has a Veterans Resource Center (VRC) that helps to provide resources and a home to student veterans. The VRC is staffed by student veterans using VA work-study to assist them with their certification and documentation as well as to have connections and support across campus. MU VRC Student Assistants are the veteran ambassadors, helping other veterans and keeping up to date with both campus and community resources to make sure their needs and concerns are both heard and met.

MU also offers something called an M-withdrawal which means that if a student is called to military duty while they are in school, their transcripts will indicate that they are leaving for a military responsibility. When that happens, the student is not penalized for their withdrawal and if they are using the GI Bill, the University gives the VA back those funds so that the student can withdrawal without penalty to their VA educational benefits. MU currently offers application fee waivers to all veterans.

The MU VRC also plans various programs and events such as Veterans Day Run, Walk, Roll on Monday, Nov. 12, and financial literacy days with PSECU.

“Millersville hosts a plethora of programs appealing to student veterans such as the meteorology program and the OSHA program. We value our student veterans and appreciate the experience and diversity they bring to our campus and classroom. As much as we can, we work to celebrate and honor our veterans for their service to our country as well as their commitment to our community,” says Yvonne DeBlois, veteran’s resource center administrator.

For several years, Millersville University has been designated silver for the Military Friendly Award. The Military Friendly award is based on a survey of programs, offerings, and policies that help determine the ease and environment for veterans at various institutions. Because MU offers a heightened level of service and support to military students than on average, MU is designated Military Friendly. The Silver ranking indicates that even among “military friendly” institutions, Millersville goes above in support and consideration of student veterans, marking MU in the top 30 percent of participating institutions.
