Understanding the refugee crisis and education in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Academic Advisement Coordinator/Instructor Presents at Lancaster Refugee Center and Community School

Dr. Margaret Mbindyo, an Academic Advisement Coordinator/Instructor for the Department of Academic Advisement & Student Development at Millersville, presented at the Refugee Center and Community School in Lancaster on Feb. 15. The presentation was on understanding the refugee crisis and education in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Recently, a large number of refugees from Congo have relocated to Lancaster County. The audience for the presentation was comprised of IU13 staff, Lancaster Refugee Center staff, and Lancaster School District counselors and faculty. Mbindyo, who is originally from Kenya, got involved with the project because of her volunteer work at Church World Services in Lancaster City where she assists with refugee resettlement. In addition, her dissertation and continuing research is on college success for low income first generation and international college students.
