Get on your walking shoes because this Friday, Feb. 23 is Millersville University’s 10th annual Relay for Life. This year’s theme is “Relay in the USA” and the event will take place in Marauder Courts from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. There are 32 teams registered and 367 participants signed up so far.
Relay for Life is a fundraising event that takes place across the country to support the American Cancer Society. Throughout the evening and into Saturday morning there will be activities and events to participate in to raise money for the American Cancer Society. There will be soccer and dodgeball tournaments, karaoke, Airbanz, Zumba, Miss Relay and much more to keep participants up and energized. There will also be a nap room where you can pay to get some rest or you can pay to put your friends in “jail.” Student organizations such as Expressions Company, Chromatic Expansion, Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia and the Millersville Dance Team will also be performing throughout the night.
A new event called 10 Inches for 10 Years will also take place for the first time this year. After the opening ceremony and the survivor lap, students will be allowed to get their hair cut to donate to Pantene Beautiful Lengths, an organization that gives free wigs to women who are battling cancer. Students must have at least eight inches of hair to donate and their hair can-not be bleached or permanently colored.
Haley Poust, the president of Relay for Life, is very excited but also sad about her last Relay at Millersville. “This Relay I am looking forward to a lot of things,” she says. “I am looking forward to donating my hair to Pantene Beautiful Lengths and relaying with my sorority Alpha Sigma Tau. I am also looking forward to the Luminaria Ceremony. This ceremony means so much to me as I remember and honor those in my life who have battled cancer. I am sad to realize this will be my last Relay for Life as a Millersville University student, but I am excited to lead the ceremonies one last time as we bring this campus together to fight for a world with less cancer and a world with more birthdays.”
This year’s goal for Relay for Life is $30,000 and right now MU has raised $17,598. If you are interested in donating or participating go to tinyurl.com/MURELAY2018.
