Graphics Students Recognized Nationally

Gold for Seniors Brittany Myers, Nicole McNerney and David Deighan.

When three Millersville University students boarded their plane to go to the 2017 Specialty Graphic Imaging Association (SGIA) Expo in New Orleans, Louisiana, they had little to no idea they would each be coming home with a Golden Image award from the association’s prestigious Golden Image Competition. Seniors Brittany Myers, Nicole McNerney and David Deighan certainly “struck gold” in the categories of finished garments, three-dimensional plastic products and pad printed products resulting in them not only making a name for themselves, but the University as well.

“Winning three gold awards puts Millersville University among the top college Graphic Communication programs in the world in terms of quality and capability. The ability to consistently print such high-quality products indicates that Millersville has an excellent program that teaches students the many variables involved in specialty printing,” said Johnny Shell, SGIA’s vice president of technical services.

With 71 entries in the student division of the contest from around the globe, Myers, McNerney and Deighan had a lot of tough competition. Images were judged on the technical accomplishments, excluding aesthetic issues from the evaluation and scoring process while prints were judged on the level of difficulty and quality of execution.

“The judges had a very difficult time this year, not because of the sheer volume of entries, but because of the overall quality of the work. Judges in virtually every category told me the entries were so good that choosing winners was a real challenge,” said Shell.

With an increasingly competitive industry in the Graphic Communication field, awards such as these can make all the difference on a resume, especially from organizations as widely known as SGIA. “This is tremendous exposure for the students to a lot of companies that could potentially hire them in the future,” said MU professor of Applied Engineering & Technology, Dr. Mark Snyder.

“I am very proud our students,” said Snyder.  “We selected the three best samples of student work to submit from last Spring’s Packaging & Specialty Printing course–and all three won Golden Image awards. That’s quite an accomplishment!”
