For the sixth year in a row, Millersville University has been nationally recognized as a winner of the INSIGHT into Diversity magazine’s Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award. MU is the only Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) institution to make the list this year.
It’s an honor that the University does not take lightly. The HEED Award recognizes the efforts and successes of colleges and universities to encourage diversity and inclusion on their campuses. It is the only award of its kind in the country.
“Millersville University continues to make diversity and inclusion a priority on campus every year, and it is nice to be recognized for these efforts,” says President John Anderson. “This semester we will open our new Intercultural Center, which will further these goals by serving as a common space for our many student cultural organizations to come together, implement programs and work directly with the campus community.”
The University hosts a variety of programs and events that emphasize the importance of diversity and inclusion. Student organizations focus on community outreach and faculty and staff promote inclusion.
“The HEED Award process consists of a comprehensive and rigorous application that includes questions relating to the recruitment and retention of students and employees — and best practices for both — continued leadership support for diversity, and other aspects of campus diversity and inclusion,” explains Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. “We take a holistic approach to reviewing each application in deciding who will be named a HEED Award recipient. Our standards are high, and we look for institutions where diversity and inclusion are woven into the work being accomplished every day across their campus.”
