The softball field at Millersville University will officially be named the “Seaber Softball Stadium” at a dedication on April 8. The naming honors Kathy Hughes Seaber and her late husband, Sam Seaber, Jr. The dedication at 12:45 p.m. is open to the public and precedes the softball doubleheader against Kutztown at 1 p.m.
The Seaber/Hughes family has been a long-time supporter of Millersville University. Her grandfather founded a scholarship in the journalism and English departments through the Hughes Family Foundation. This foundation also supports scholarships for Monroe County students attending MU. Kathy continues to fund those scholarships as well as scholarships in music, baseball and softball. She recently committed to fund more than $300,000 in new softball scholarships and the University is honoring her with the naming of the softball field.
“I want to thank Kathy and the Hughes Family Foundation for their continued support,” says Miles Gallagher, athletic director at Millersville. “This will make a tangible difference in the lives of our student-athletes for years to come.”
Seaber, who earned her graduate degree at Millersville, has been involved in many aspects of the University. As a teacher for 38 years in the Warwick School District in Lititz, Seaber worked with many student teachers from Millersville and got to know the education faculty. She also took voice lessons with Jean Bradel, a former music professor at Millersville.
Kathy became interested in softball because of her late husband’s enjoyment of the sport as a player and a coach.
“Sam was the athlete of our family,” says Kathy. “He played men’s slow-pitch softball for many years in Manheim Township and he coached the Blue Angels, a Pennsylvania state champion women’s slow-pitch team, with his friend, Bob Funk. I loved watching the girls play and I can’t wait to see the Marauders practice. Jen [Probst, softball coach] keeps me updated on their progress.”
