“This is a tough show,” director Gene Ellis explained. “There are tough themes that we cover; issues that students have to deal with every day.  This was a complete collaboration of faculty and students working together.”

Spring Awakening, the rock musical is inspired by Frank Wedekind’s controversial 1891 play about teen sexuality and society’s efforts to control it. Through rebellious trials and tribulations, the sensuality of the characters is often denied and suppressed, leading to tragic consequences. The original Broadway production opened at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre on December 10, 2006. The play has also been seen at local colleges Elizabethtown and Franklin & Marshall.

The original Broadway production won eight Tony Awards, including Tony’s for Best Musical, Direction, Book, Score and Featured Actor. The production also garnered four Drama Desk Awards and its original cast album received a Grammy Award. In addition, the show was revived in 2015 on Broadway and garnered three Tony Award nominations, among other honors.
