Millersville University Police Department Gains Two Officers

policeOn Sept. 1, Millersville University became even safer than before. On that evening, Joseph David and Spencer Rios were sworn in as the Millersville University Police Department’s newest officers.

“It is a special moment for our new officers and their families,” says Chief of Police Pete Anders.

Taking place in the Winter Visual and Performing Arts Center’s Biemesderfer Concert Hall, the swearing in ceremony started off with a welcome from Brian Hazlett, vice president for student affairs and enrollment management. The national anthem followed, led by Dr. Allen “Kit” Howell, associate professor of music and men’s glee club advisor.

After remarks from President Anderson, the Honorable Joshua Keller, a magisterial district justice, swore David and Rios in as police officers. Anders followed with some final remarks before pinning the badges on his newest officers with Anderson, officially marking the addition of David and Rios to the Millersville University Police Department.

The Challenge: Sing or Donate

Dr. Dennis Denenberg, retired professor emeritus at Millersville University would like you to take the challenge! Individuals nominated for “the Breast Cancer Challenge” have two options, to sing the 30-second chorus of Liz Fulmer’s “Fighter” or to donate $10 to Diana’s Dreamers: Determined to Defeat Breast Cancer. Both options further a good cause.

“The Breast Cancer Challenge” is an initiative designed to further the education of college-aged men and women about breast cancer as a branch of the Breast Cancer Awareness Program at Millersville University.

Structured similarly to the once viral “ice bucket challenge,” “the Breast Cancer Challenge” requires participants to post a video onto social media of themselves completing an action and then challenging friends to do the same. For this initiative, the action is singing the chorus of “Fighter,” by Liz Fulmer, and challenging three friends to do likewise or donate. The social media post should include the hashtag #DianasDreamers.

Fulmer is a member of the MU Class of 2015, and the lyrics to her song are, “And you won’t ever see her giving up, you won’t hear her say she’s had enough. Cause she is a fighter. You won’t ever see her curse the sky, you won’t hear her ask the heaven’s why. Cause she is a fighter.”

The official launch video is posted on the initiative’s website, featuring members from Millersville University’s breast cancer health committee. MU President John Anderson is one of several people who have already accepted “the Breast Cancer Challenge” after filming his own video.

McIllwaine Honored by AAUA

McIlwaineDr. William B. McIlwaine, long-time member of Millersville University’s Council of Trustees was honored with the Dan L. King award from the American Association of University Administrators (AAUA) on June 15.

He received the award in person from the very man for whom it was named, Dan L. King.

Earlier, the AAUA held its Leadership Seminar on June 10 – 11, 2016 in San Antonio, Texas, when Dr. McIlwaine’s award was officially presented. As Dr. McIlwaine noted, “being in my 90s, I wasn’t quite up to the trip.”

So, King, who recently relocated to Pennsylvania, offered to come to Millersville University so he could give Dr. McIlwaine the award and shake hands with the man whom he called “an inspiration.” King noted that the list of nominees for the prestigious award had numbered more than 100.

The Dan L. King Award for University and College Trustee Leadership recognizes a current or former trustee or governing board member for their leadership, commitment to higher education and ethical standards. It is named for Dan King, the current president/CEO of AAUA and longest serving executive officer in its history.

“Dr. McIlwaine is a tireless volunteer serving his 21st year as a trustee at Millersville,” said Dr. John Anderson, president of Millersville University. “As a former professor of physical sciences for more than 32 years, he offers an academic balance to the composition of the Council and is a model of civic engagement.”

Immediately after he received the Dan L. King Award, Dr. McIlwaine was presented with a resolution from Guido Pichini, chairman the Board of Governors for Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education.

“In life, we often have just a handful of mentors that we can count on one hand. These are people who have impacted us most,” said Pichini. “Bill, you are one of my five mentors.”

Through the years, McIlwaine has held positions as representative to the Foundation Board, vice chair of the programs committee and treasurer of the Pennsylvania Association of Councils of Trustees. His long list of community affiliations includes the local school board, YMCA, Boy and Eagle Scouts, the visual and performing arts and the Pennsylvania Science Teachers. At Millersville University, he has endowed a scholarship in earth sciences, as well as a Master Class in music performance in memory of his late wife, Melva S. McIlwaine.

Just a few weeks before the presentation, McIlwaine had spent time at a local third grade classroom, volunteering with the young students and sharing stories about his experiences as a U.S. veteran. That, he said, is what it means to him to be an educator.
